Infosys, or as engineers refer to it -Infy, is number 2 among the big 4 of the Indian software giants and IT mass recruiters. After the recent corporate governance setbacks and the sea change global politics and business have seen, Infosys still has shown an over 10 billion dollar revenue. Those 10 billion dollars come from Infy’s team of thousands of engineers. Today we will find out how to get into Infosys, what you can expect once you get there and what the future holds for you there. Just like the previous article about TCS, this will also be a numbers-driven report.
How To Get Into Infosys: The selection procedure hasn’t changed much over the years. It goes as follows. You need 65% aggregate to be eligible. The tests are -
Aptitude Test ( Verbal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude)
Interview
What has changed recently is the difficulty level. Nowadays, mere theoretical knowledge isn’t sufficient anymore. As mentioned before, please make sure you have significant coding practice. A familiarity with basic concepts of machine learning, blockchain, and digital media would increase your chances significantly.
Infosys has renewed its business strategy and made blockchain and digital the cornerstones of its plan. One of the biggest projects Infosys is running is the newly set up “TradeConnect” that provides blockchain based solutions for 7 major Indian banks to address the trade finance process needs. Another big addition to the Infosys eco-system is “WongDoody” - a digital and creative firm. It’s the latest in a long chain of Infosys digital studios all over the world. It is important to understand that Infosys is aiming to be not just a software company but an end to end IT-based business solution provider. Which is where the creative design aspect comes in.
Infosys encourages and trains its employees to use “design thinking”. For Infosys, employee utilization rate is the mantra of the year. Therefore, a candidate with coding skills, basic blockchain/machine learning, and digital design will have an edge over the others. In short, creative coders are what they’re looking for.
The pre-2017 years have seen heavy recruitment by Infosys, a lot of it on day zero. However, that’s about to change. The total recruitment numbers have been lower than the last year, although by not a large margin. Some market analysts are saying that the downturn in recruitment is a harbinger of even fewer recruitments in the future. The CEO bosses counter it by saying that it is business as usual. In any case, the bounty of jobs that Infosys provided is gone for sure.
The age range in Infosys is also undergoing a change and it might be a worrying symptom for freshers in the market. If you go through Infy’s 2017-18 annual report, you’ll notice that the percentage of 18-25-year-old employees has come down from 31.19% to 28.16%. To be clearer, it has gone from 62,489 to 57,475. Although, it’s bad news for new graduates and undergraduates, it’s good news for experienced engineers with specific skills who’ve spent time in the corporate milieu.
What You Can Expect: The salaries are on the lower side of the spectrum. However, if you’re selected, the training is one of the world’s best. So consider Infosys if you want to become a market-ready tech-expert by the end of your training period.
As a fresher, it’s rather hard for an average candidate to get appointed to an onsite project. Even for candidates with experience, it is becoming harder due to H1-B Visa restrictions in the US. Even more, worrying for desis is the fact that Infosys has started hiring from local universities in the states to reduce its dependency on the H1-B program. Last year Infosys hired 800 people locally. They have also started a talent development center in Connecticut and promised to develop 1000 jobs in the city by 2022. And that’s just from one city. Infy has promised to create 10,000 jobs in the US locally in the next 2 years.
Yes, things look a bit glum but on the positive side - the training and skill updation is high quality and continuous. If you keep updating yourself, Infosys provides a well structured corporate ladder for you to climb. A skilled and constantly learning employee can have quite a life at Infosys.
