During college life, a lot of us become very opinionated and driven because of the endless information that is given to us. If someone has ideas rushing through them, starting a blog is the best way to channelize that. Having a blog is extremely beneficial in the long run because, after a point, your blog address may even do the job of a business card. While people may feel that blogging today has become pretentious, there is a whole community out there benefitting from it. Blogging is one of the best forums for artistic expression. So how should you go about starting? Here is my take on the same and I hope you find it useful.
THE BIG QUESTIONS
What should my blog be about? Am I good enough to do it?
These are a few questions people ask themselves before starting off. To answer all these questions, one just needs to introspect and find their niche or perhaps, an identifier! Is there something people around you know you for? Is there something you’re really good at but nobody really knows? Your blog should be about what your world revolves around – something you spend a considerable amount of time THINKING about. It can be about fashion/lifestyle/art/poetry/photograph – anything!
A word I will be continuously using is “Identifier” and the reason I stress on it so much is that if you start a blog, people must be able to ASSOCIATE you with it. It isn’t really about what you do, it’s all about what you contribute to it. Let’s say that you have a photography account, people should be able to remember it and the only thing that will make them remember and want to come back to it is the personal contribution or touch that you added to your blog. Also, the ground rule for blogging, in my opinion, is to always be original!
THE URL AND BLOG NAME
The URL and blog name play a major role in your journey as a blogger. As much as you hate it, people do tend to judge a book by its cover and hence, your URL and Blog name should be something inviting – people need to have a reason to click on the link and hence either the URL or blog name should have a fair hint of what your blog is about! If you have a travel blog and name it something like “Stories on Wheels” – people may instantly connect to it.
Creativity knows no bounds and you can be as experimental as you want with your URL and blog name, but remember to choose something that you do not regret down the line.
THINK ABOUT WHO GETS TO “HOST” YOU
During college years, it can be tough to set a budget for something new that you may or may not be sure of. For this reason, it is always easy to turn to free hosts like WordPress. But, if you are really serious about your blog and consider it as a hobby that has a potential to turn into a career – hosting yourself is an investment!
TO BE CONTENT WITH THE CONTENT
Always remember this – your blog is something that will digitally represent you. It will definitely fetch you some brownie points if you add the link on to your CV. It gives out the message that there is something in the virtual space that is your brainchild and hence, you must also be very careful about what you upload or put on the internet. For a professional purpose and for uniformity, you must have a visual theme.
People who are into blogging often get confused between Consistency and Creativity or – Quality and Quantity. More often than not, there is a dissonance between the two. When you start off, you must understand that you need to strike a balance between the two. While you need to post regularly to make sure that your blog is active, you must also keep in mind that you might not want to post just any random thing for the heck of it. Take your time to create content that will stay with people. If it really is a “pick one” situation and you find it tough to create a balance – always pick Quality because this way, you will stay true to your craft. I once heard a saying – If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well!
