We have always been conditioned to know that water exists as a liquid state of matter, under certain temperatures, after which it turns to Ice, which is solid. But did you know that if water is cooled sufficiently under specific conditions and temperatures, it will convert to another form of liquid before it converts to ice?
Angell, a Regents Professor in ASU's School of Molecular Sciences, has spent a considerable part of her career studying the properties of water. Along with her colleagues, she found out that this new state of water, although still liquid, is of relatively lower density and the hydrogen molecules in this liquid are arranged differently. In a way, this gives them a relatively stronger bonding and results in it being a viscous liquid.
According to recent studies, the way men and women smile differs in terms of dynamics and research has enabled Artificial Intelligence to determine the gender of an individual based purely on their smile! Automatic gender recognition is a premise that has been visited and worked upon in the past but it has solely been limited to identifying fixed facial features.
The new research, by the University of Bradford, is the first of its kind because they have used a dynamic facial feature, which is the smile, to recognize genders and distinguish between both of them. This research confirms the fact that women are more expressive when they smile and according to it, women smile relatively wider.
3)MUSIC THAT IS “ALIEN” TO THE EARS... AND THE BRAIN!
Researchers have recently been curious about alien music.. music of the aliens! How would we perceive it? Would we be appreciative of it? Would it be similar to ours in terms of structure? The research was carried out to know more about this.
Vincent Cheung, along with Angela Friederici, Stefan Koelsch, and Lars Meyer have been studying how the human brain processes non-local dependencies- which bind non-adjacent items. Composers use this technique to build expectations and gain emotional responses from their audience. Dependencies, on the other hand – are conceptual threads that bind two things together, with reference to language and music. Mr Cheung did not have music from the “other world” but using these concepts, he developed music of his own which was used for testing.
In order to test the feeling of premonition, or the quality to predict an event, i.e. “see” it approaching, psychologists recreated déjà vu in human subjects in order to study and examine premonitions experienced during the state of déjà vu.
Anne Cleary, a cognitive psychologist at Colorado State University, has worked towards establishing déjà vu as a phenomenon related to memory. Building on previously conducted experiments, she claims that the feeling that comes with déjà vu is merely a feeling but it “feels” as though it is rooted in reality. According to results, participants were not able to tell about the future any better than they would while taking wild guesses but during déjà vu, it just felt more real.
5) IF YOU’RE HAPPY AND YOU KNOW IT.. DON’T CLAP YOUR HANDS.
Individuals by and large get a kick out of the chance to feel cheerful, yet accomplishing a condition of happiness requires some serious energy. Scientists have now discovered that individuals who seek happiness regularly feel like they don't have enough time in the day, and this paradoxically makes them feel miserable.
