KIIT University located in Bhubaneswar, Orissa is well known for its placements. More than 80% of its students get placed every year. This is a great number, keeping in mind the current situation of the technological, financial and managerial job sector in India. The procedure followed by the university is quite similar to some other universities with slight changes in recent years. At KIIT University, the placement procedure begins quite early on. The university trains its students in certain valuable skill sets which may prove crucial in the professional sector. From their second year, students are given mandatory training on subjects like Ethics, Management, Market and various others, along with their course subjects. They are given three-hour classes especially devoted to cracking the entrance exams of different companies and other competitive exams, and regular tests are held which further prepares the students for the real scene.
The procedure for placement at KIIT University is quite simple. From the beginning of the seventh semester, the students are asked to attend various industrial talks given by representatives of various companies that are going to recruit them. The seventh semester begins around July. Every student is given prior notice about the companies that are going to arrive via e-mails. In the emails, it is notified that students from which branch are going to be able to sit for the placement. Application Criteria are set by the various companies, which vary from conduct reports to academic performances. On an average, the basic requirement specified by almost every company ranges from a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 6.5 to 8.5. Students appearing for placement must also be certified in a particular field related to their branch. This field may be technical or management related as well. They also require a certificate of the internship, preferably industrial internship. The placements are divided into a number of days, starting from Day Zero. In Day Zero, only a handful of students are selected, who are generally the best in their technology sectors. The companies which arrive on Day Zero are mostly the ones who provide a very high salary package, but their application criteria are stringent. Starting from Day One, the mass recruiters arrive and their recruitment continues for a number of days. In the end, start-ups and other small companies may arrive who offer a very standard package.
Students at KIIT University are asked to apply for different companies online via links sent to them in their e-mails.
First off, there are the written exams. The syllabus for the written exams is Aptitude (which is basic mathematics till class 10), Verbal Ability, Reasoning Ability and Technical Knowledge. Among the students who qualify for the next round, about 90% of them are already selected through the written exams. Technical Knowledge generally includes a very good understanding of Java, C, C++ programming languages. The result for the written exam comes by the end of the day or within a couple of days. Students who get selected are advised to attend a seminar that is given a few hours prior to the beginning of the next round. This seminar is generally conducted by the panel who will finally decide whether you have the skills necessary to be a part of the company.
The next round includes Group Discussion. In this section, a set of six students are placed in a room and they are asked to debate amongst themselves on a particular topic in front of the panel. Based on their reasoning and communication skills they are selected. In some cases, the entire set of students may be selected or only one or two amongst them are selected. The different topics to be debated on our day to day scenarios, case studies, daily news or an abstract topic.
Students who have qualified for the next round have to prepare for a personal interview. In this interview, the interviewer asks questions which require confident answers. The students are always advised to behave properly and be on their best behavior during these sessions. Some questions are asked by the panel pertaining to their topic during the seminar as well. The technical evaluation may also be taken by the panel in some cases. This is the last and toughest leg of the race that began a long time back. With this, the placement procedure has ended. Now, the students must wait for their placement offer and letter of employment from the company.
Over the years this procedure has been mostly followed with some minor alterations from time to time. From this year, i.e. 2018, the students are asked to sign a bond in their first year only. The bond asks the student to make a final decision on whether he will sit during the placements or go for higher studies. The students are going to be prevented from sitting in both competitive exams and campus recruitments. They are given the option of choosing only one. Students are further not allowed to sit for a placement if he or she is already placed. These rules and regulations are set to give every student a chance to equality. But, the core procedure remains the same. At the end of the day, it boils down to the confidence and knowledge of the candidate, along with a stroke of luck, which eventually lands them a job.
