Talking about College Placements in India for engineering graduates is always a great topic. Because most of them come to college just for getting placed and earning millions (Haha, at least they think so). And students are ready to do whatever it takes. What is it about college placements that motivates everyone so much and makes it the centre of their life for a few months?
Here are a few reasons why we love placements, and we think you should too:
Opportunities at your doorstep
Campus placements are these fests of opportunities, right within your reach. Think about it, what'd happen if campus placements weren't there? You'd have to scour around for jobs, and then apply for them, one at a time. It would have been a tiring process. Also, the sheer magnitude of jobs out there makes it statistically likely that you'd miss out on a lot of other great employment opportunities.
Instead, you have this neat little setting where you apply for jobs from a certain stream and every placement option related to your stream is conveyed to you. All you need to do is put on a shirt, walk out of your dorm, and sit for the interviews (umm, actually you need to do a lot more to actually get placed, but let’s not digress).
Campus placements have definitely reduced the stress on students when it comes to finding jobs, leaving them free to pursue their course with full dedication.
Having seniors and teachers to guide you
Most likely, it'll be your first-time job hunting. You wouldn't have sat in an interview before and would have no idea of what to expect and how to proceed with your preparations. Now imagine if you had to do all this by yourself, outside the campus.
Instead, during campus placements, you will have people around you who can help you optimise your chances of getting placed. There will be teachers, seniors who are placed in the same company, or the placement cell itself will organize help.
These collective inputs definitely give you a considerable edge.
Freedom to choose jobs that best suit you
When you are applying for jobs through newspaper ads, or on the internet, you are kind of shooting in the dark. You just have a brief description of what you are applying for, and don't have time on your hands to investigate more because, well, you need a job asap. Eventually, even if you get a job, chances are you might not end up feeling content with it because you didn’t have enough information before.
That isn't the case with campus placements. You know exactly what the company is offering because many of them visit your campus. You can also rely on your seniors and teachers to get a pretty decent estimate of what to expect out of the job.
This knowledge enables you to screen your options more carefully and helps you settle for one that suits you best.
You get what you deserve
Fairness is an attribute we seldom find in the big bad world.
Out in the real world, you will just not be competing against like-minded peers for a job, you will also be up against people with recommendations, money, or influence. And that really turns the game in their favour.
However, thankfully, fairness is what you often get in campus placements. The sole basis of your selection is the skills you possess, and how professionally you are able to convey them.
Makes you future ready
No matter how much you like campus interviews, things won't be as easy once you leave college.
Beyond that, you will have to capture, on your own, every growth opportunity along the way. You will have to analyse it and act on it, all the while being pressed for time.
Though you won't have the ease of campus placements beyond your college, they do serve as decent training wheels before you are launched into real life. It trains you for everything you would possibly require in your journey ahead in the professional world.
The dream of getting placed
This is the main motive for any student attending a college - get a job.
Placements help students fulfil that dream. With your college guiding you every step of the way, it doesn't seem so far-fetched or insurmountable anymore, and actually gives you a much better shot at realizing your dream.
So, don’t hate on placements. It’s actually much better than what the real world has in store for you. All the best!
