I am in the last year of engineering & I got placed in Suzuki Motors. I am planing to give CAT next year. After my initial training, I will be asked to prioritise field of interest in Suzuki among supply chain management, sales& marketing, production, R&D etc. Which field will give me advantage in terms of experience, IIM interview, placements etc?

More than the advantage, where do you think your interest lies in? Because if you are interested in Marketing in MBA, then choosing a marketing stream would serve as an advantage for you.. Advantage will be in such a form and a particular stream cannot promise you an advantage.

Second question: (off the topic but it would be great if you can guide from your experience) I am a non IIT gem with acads 95/85/70. I am expecting 99+ percentile in this year's CAT. If I am able to convert MDI or FMS, should I join? Or should I take work experience of Suzuki ? What will be beneficial in terms of placement & learning at BSchools?

Main difference is; Consulting is more of providing a strategy / suggesting the best solution to a problem.. Whereas marketing is hands on . You will figure out all the possible solutions and implement it.

Hello ma'am!! . I am currently working as a project engineer in Wipro technologies and planning to give CAT . My academics are 92/82/75. I am more inclined to finance only because it suits my personality . Is this the right way to choose a specialization? Will my past work experience or academics will be any disadvantage in case of Short listing for summer internship for finance profiles?

There is no best domain as such. I can only help you with the best domain for you, if you can tell me the kind of a career you are looking out for/ what interests you. Or if you have such a background which domain in MBA can probably enhance your profile

Hello , good qn. SO tell me about your personality ..Why do you think it ll suit finance? You can choose a specialisation such a way, but it should not be the only way to choose. For instance, they say that introverts dont do well in Marketing. But i know many introverts who excel in marketing. As for shortlisting, each company has their criteria for shortlisting that keeps changing each year. But does not mean that if your a techie you ll not end up in Fin roles. SO what you can probably do is take up a few online fin courses or something to sprinkle in the finance aroma. Even if you do not end up in finance for summers and fin is your hugest inclination you can do FRM/CFA and take up fin electives and hope for a good finance role in your final placements.

Why do you think it would not work out ? And you have cracked those MBA entrances and come this far, so picking up concepts should not be a problem.

At this point, I am not sure which specialisation suits me or interests me but I am good at communication and a certified memeber of Toastmasters International (a public speaking platform). Do I have a good chance in marketing ? (In terms of shortlisting of various companies as weel)

    04:19 PM

  • Profile Picture ANKUSH KAR

Yes ma'am. I am an introvert and that's why I think of taking up finance specialization . Also CFA level 1 cost of clearing is around one lakh . So can you recommend any other courses before giving CAT to show an inclination in any specialization which will be helpful in PI too ? Another question if I somehow become fully sure of finance specialization should I do it before giving CAT or after entering the b - school? Is it possible to pursue courses like CFA with the rigorous academic curriculum of b- schools?

It is okay if you are still not sure. But Yes, you do seem to be having good chances in marketing based on your personality. Again, shortlisting criteria for each company varies each year and for each role. No one is aware of how the company shortlists, so i will not be able to comment on shortlists. But building up a good marketing profile is in your hands. You can take up marketing live projects , clubs etc.

Well i would not recommend that you being an introvert you ll choose finance. Are you good with numbers, analytics, prefer a desk job etc..? For other courses, check out Vskills , NSE etc . ANd yes, being a part of MBA, you should be able to balance anything and everything. Most of those writing CFA prepare alongside the hectic curriculum. SO it is more than possible

Is it true that IITians or IITians+work ex or work ex people are given opportunity for consulting (shortlisting on day 0,1)? Can a fresher non IIT engineer dream for consulting or work experience is a must ?

    04:34 PM

  • Profile Picture ANKUSH KAR

Yes ma'am I prefer a desk job and I am also analytical but I cannot understand " good with numbers " meaning ? I have always stellar grades in maths in 10th , 12th and b.tech ? Does that mean I am good with numbers ?

Everything you hear is a myth. Ill suggest you dont push yourself down with myths or hope that it is a myth and fixate yourself. There have been cases where IIT ians get shortlists day0/1 and also a few IITians who still end up not getting placed and opt out. Similarly for non IITian engineers. How shortlists comes cannot be determined and forecasting might lead you to disappointments. SO i would say, instead of worrying about shortlists, prepare yourself to convert your best shortlist :) ANd yes, there have been instances when a guy from a govt col in TN got placed in PwC .. SO just you do everything from your side and hope for the best shortlists.
