    2 questions:

    1) Do we need to stick to the one side or should we favour any side? Let's say topic is demonetisation: a good move? If we are for the topic, should we only write about advantages with facts, analysis etc or should we represent both the sides ?

Never wrong to start early. And for XAT if I am not wrong, you will have WAT along with your XAT right? Spending half an hour per day tops now will definitely not hurt right ;) You can start with reading the papers and blogs. As for blogs, read up on the current happenings and observe how people are debating. It would also help you to learn that current affairs topic better as you can see both sides of the coin.

This has been my observation and this was how i was guided as well and it worked out for me. IN WAT, it is up to you whether you wish to go for/against/stay neutral. What is important in terms of content is : 1) Make sure the facts you state are 100% right. 2) Consistency: If your going for the topic, do not deviate. Do not be for in one para and against in one para and end up in a neutral conclusion. Be firm and consistent 3) If you do not wish to take sides, you can maybe conduct an analysis of the topic with certain parameters and conclude with what you think about it based on your analysis. FOr instance in demonetization, you can analyse the topic based on the cause, effect,Corruption control, livelihood being affected , etc and conclude with something like how demonetization would effect the long term.. you get the gist right? so it is up to you.

See the main aim of WAT is to see how good your written communication is. DO not worry about humongous vocabulary or highly technical content. The reader should be delivered your content with clarity and structure. SO if your not too good about vocabulary, chill. Keep it simple. But no not miss out on three main things. 1) Consistency in thoughts 2) Structure of thoughts 3) MOST IMPORTANTLY - GRAMMAR!!!! - if your poor on this, BRUSH UP!

For IIM K, your WAT topic is based is your GD Topic and yes for IIM K PI I was asked questions about my WAT and GD. But for other institutes, it should not influence. Even if it does, remember to be consistent with what you had penned down.

Reading the papers, jotting down vocabulary with how it was used and later trying to inculcate that into your practices should do the job :)

I really do not want to restrict you with a list here, because it can be ANYTHING UNDER THE SKY. You should be knowing the hot current affair topics so brush up on that, and budget would be released the at time of your GDPI WATs so look into that and mainly abstract topics (for e.g You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar)...

the key formula is to have a catchy Introduction and conclusion. Be as creative and catchy as you can . Try not to sound monotonous and cliche. The body, its headings and structure it is all yours. DO not restrict yourself with a specific format as such. Just structure your thoughts well.

    04:38 PM

  • Profile Picture Swathika Selvam

During WAT, take a good 5-10 minutes and mind map all your thoughts. Once you get clarity on how you are going to present your thoughts, start writing.

    04:38 PM

  • Profile Picture Swathika Selvam

ANother important thing to keep in mind is time management. You do not want to end up with a nice and neat intro and end with a messy conclusion.
