The true sense of engineering can be experienced if there’s a vibrant campus life. It makes your college life memorable and also lets you brag a little about it to your fellow buddies ;)
I’ve done my Engineering from Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology a.k.a KIIT University. It’s located on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. Let me take you on a virtual campus walk around KIIT.
1) Hostel
This is the most important place of anyone’s campus life. This is where you live. This is where you do all the hard work on your studies. Most importantly, this is where you develop yourself to become a better person in terms of attitude, personality and everything else. Fortunately, I’ve enjoyed a good hostel life with all the modern facilities in KIIT. The university is very particular about providing good hostel facilities. To avoid any possibility of ragging, it’s a norm in KIIT to have a separate hostel for the 1st year students. Although ragging is prohibited on campus, being a newcomer to this arena can bring a lot of anxiety. Having a separate hostel for a full 1st year can easily remove any kind of psychological anxiety one might have and at the same time, students can focus on their studies. By the end of the year, they are well aware of the rules and the system and can take the game ahead.
2) Events
Engineering, or any stream of graduation, is not just a matter of studies. You need to indulge yourself with different kinds of events on campus throughout the year. Why? Participation in these events improves your confidence. Interacting with people improves your communication skills and network. Every year on our campus we have the annual college fest. Different kinds of events are organized, from Robotics Competitions and Paper Presentations to Debating Competitions, Treasure Hunts and Gaming. There’s also a seminar organized every year where popular personalities from different fields such as Technology, Entertainment, Sports or Politics are invited, and we get to interact with them.
Sport is an integral part of leading a healthy life. It forces you to stay fit and stay active. KIIT has been giving great importance to Sports since its inception. All the equipment provided here is of advance quality and proper guidance is provided if anyone is interested in sports.
There are different kinds of Sporting Events organized in our University:
KPL (KIIT Premier League): It’s on similar lines as the IPL - a sporting tournament organized by KIIT, where students of KIIT along with students from other colleges like IIT KGP, NIT Rourkela, ITER Bhubaneswar etc. participate. We’ve got a stadium with a capacity of holding 40,000 people and infrastructure of conducting Day-Night Matches. During my tenure in KIIT, I got the opportunity to experience the unveiling of ICC 2015 World Cup. Besides this, popular cricketers like Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag have visited the campus.
This year KIIT organized the All India Inter-Zone Inter-University Tennis tournament. A total of 105 players had been selected and distributed across 4 zones of India. The tournament was a huge success.
Besides this, we have a fully functional Indoor Stadium where anyone can play sports like Table Tennis, Basketball, Badminton, Billiards etc.
As you can see the opportunities are endless and it’s up to the students how they can grab them.
State of the Art Library: We have a central library where you can browse books from various areas such as Engineering, Medical, Dental etc. The entire system is monitored and operated by computers. Students can easily issue whatever books they want to for a stipulated amount of time. After the period is over, you can again reissue it from the library. Apart from books, you can grab some popular magazines like Frontline, India Today and others, covering all aspects of national and international coverage.
2. 24X7 WIFI Campus: One thing can I vouch for on behalf of all engineers out there is that we really need great Internet, no matter what! As per current scenario, life seems to come to a halt if we’re not connected to the internet. In our university, the hostels along with the campus are fully equipped with 24x7 wifi facility. It’s one of the high points for KIIT. Whether it’s the submission of assignments or doing online sessions it’s really necessary to have internet.
3. Modern Day Amenities: There are also several other facilities like a gym with modern equipment, a swimming pool, and a large cafeteria. There’s also a guest house where students can book a room in case their parents visit the campus.
e) Excursions and Holidays : After each academic year is over, we have a 1-1.5 months break from college. It’s the time when you do summer training, internships and other constructive work to build a strong profile and get yourself placement-ready.
As you can see, all of this contributes to a healthy campus life. These are the small building blocks that make your life away from home enjoyable and memorable.
