Why MBA?

2 years ago, I did not understand if I should pursue an MBA. Today as I graduate from IIM Udaipur (soon) I understand why MBA should be pursued. In this chat, we can talk about such soft topics which will help you answer this frequently asked question in your interview and probably help you get a better understanding of yourself and your reason to do an MBA.

    04:33 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhil Sharma

How can I (Fresher) answer the question: Why MBA? Should I include one particular domain(supply chain/operations in my case) which I want to pursue ? If yes, how can I justify my inclination towards that without any relevant work experience?

    04:33 PM

  • Profile Picture Utsav Sharma

From where should i prepare myself for GD And PI ?

    04:34 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

I would urge you to not choose a specialisation without working in a sector mohit

    04:34 PM

  • Profile Picture Aditya M

I am confused about Why I should do MBA?And in which domain i should do

    04:34 PM

  • Profile Picture Aditya M

    I am a fresher

    04:34 PM

  • Profile Picture Aditya M

Want to Give CET 18 and CAT 18

    04:35 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Utsav I think you should refer to the GD & PI materials that IIM media cells publish once the results are out. Other than that staying updated on news is the ket

    04:35 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Hey Aditya. I have the same suggestion for you as Mohit. Also I would suggest that you get atleast an year of work experience before joining an IIM.

    04:36 PM

  • Profile Picture Utsav Sharma

Ok, From where i have to purchase it and Whats the name?

B.E. 55% aggregate but 65 in final yr

    04:37 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Aditya frankly your academics scores are a little below the average an IIM generally has. You have to make it up by excelling in something else to have a shot

    04:38 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhil Sharma

Hey Ankush, I belong to GEM non IIT studying in the last year and I got placed in one well reputed automobile firm. From your experience IIM U, what would you advice ? Join any good IIM as a fresher or after work ex of 1.5-2 years? (In terms of learning and placement at IIM)

    04:38 PM

  • Profile Picture Utsav Sharma

Ok i am in 3rd year now planning to drop a year for CAT2018. would there be any problem for me regarding the selection and further placements?

    04:39 PM

  • Profile Picture Utsav Sharma

My acad. 10- 7.2 CGPA, 12th 78.8 AND grad. 56% of two years Commerce Background

    04:40 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Mohit I would recommend that you get 2 years of work experience and then apply. It will have two benefits: 1. You will be able to crack a better ranked B school as admission has weightage for work ex. 2. In the b school you will get better placements and better learning from subjects

    04:40 PM

  • Profile Picture Sunny Murdia

how are the placements @ IIM Udaipur in terms of domestic average and median packages ?

    04:40 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhil Sharma

In addition to my last question: As you already told, work ex is better before IIM, my concern is work ex of automobile firm is useful ?( I will mostly be in production or supply chain management department)

    04:41 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Hi utsav. I recommend you get some work experience. Defending dropped year for CAT is difficult in the interview. And I think you would need to pull your grad score atleast above 60 to have a shot at an IIM

    04:42 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhil Sharma

I am placed in Maruti Suzuki

    04:42 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Hey Sunny. Placements this year have been really good. 75% plus batch was placed in the first placement slot

    04:42 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

I will give you a press release link to see the figures.

    04:43 PM

  • Profile Picture Utsav Sharma

In my College there is no placement also i have not much time i have to complete my Mba till 2020. Due to some family issues.

    04:43 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Mohit Maruti Suzuki is an excellent brand to work for. It will be a big plus for you when you give CAT in 2 years

    04:44 PM

  • Profile Picture Utsav Sharma

I will try to get above 60% If not then would there be any problem?

    04:44 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Utsav then you have to really score an ace in CAT. It is not uncommon for IIMs to spring a surprise and take in freshers. IIMA did it this year

    04:44 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

I cannot say problem or not. All I can say is higher the Marks, better the chances.

    04:45 PM

  • Profile Picture Sunny Murdia

I will have 3 years of work experience by August. How good are my chances of getting into top 4 IIMs if I write CAT 2018 ?

    04:45 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Depends upon your CAT score and your profile. Work experience is in the almost perfect range.

    04:46 PM

  • Profile Picture Utsav Sharma

Okay. How much extra co cirriculars acts. matters in the PI ?

    04:46 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhil Sharma

That's my dilemma actually. I got placed only in Maruti Suzuki in November, a week before CAT. From CAT answer key, I am expecting 99+ for sure (99

    04:46 PM

  • Profile Picture Sunny Murdia

grad score is 7.5 and 10th and 12th are 93 and 88 respectively

    04:46 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Utsav I would suggest that you view the admission policy. You can find it at www.iimu.ac

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

    www.iimu.ac.in

    04:47 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhil Sharma

(99.5+ will be tough), so with this I have chance of MDI If I can convert. If you were at my place what would u have done? Working in MARUTI Suzuki for 2 years and opt for good iims/FMs or join MDI if given chance ?

    04:47 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhil Sharma

I mistakenly press enter. Please read my full question in two parts. (Last two messages)

    04:48 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Mohit, I would suggest that give the interviews and see what you get. Work experience people always have an advantage in a B School. But freshers sometimes do land really good packages too.

    04:48 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Mohit frankly i had decided that I would not pursue an MBA from anything less than an IIM. So my opinion will be biased.

    04:50 PM

  • Profile Picture Utsav Sharma

How much Extra Co-Cirriculars act. matters in the P.I.?

    04:50 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Sunny you have a decent profile. If you manage a 99.6-7, you might be able to crack the top 4 I think. If you are in 99.5-98.5 range, you might get K, I , U , S etc

Ankush one another thing if you can guide. Does IIM tag matter in long term? People say look for ROI(best in FMS, NITIE,JBIMS) as IIM tag will matter for initial 2-3 years then onwards only your work experience will matter. What's your take?

    04:51 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Utsav please see the entire admission policy of the IIM you are interested in. It differs from college to college. For IIMU you can check it out at www.iimu.ac.in and go to the admission policy section

    04:52 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Hey Kanika. Even though I understand that B.Com (H) main its difficult to score very high, but all IIMs treat grad score of all.universifies equally and thus 67.2 is about a little less than average.

    04:53 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

However you can score on other parameters to make up for that

    04:53 PM

  • Profile Picture Utsav Sharma

How are Tier 2 MBA colleges? if i not get any Tier 1 colleges

    04:53 PM

  • Profile Picture Kunal Gavali

Is it like the work ex iim demand should be from a reputed firm? Or any work ex is considered ?

    04:53 PM

  • Profile Picture Utsav Sharma

    Are they worthful?

    04:53 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

I think IIM tag will stick to you for life. Brand name is brand name. But that's a strictly personal opinion. People who opted for private colleges like MDI or NMIMS will differ with me.

    04:54 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Kanika, M Com will fetch you brownie points. But be sure you can defend well.why you want to go for double masters in an interview

    04:55 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

I think if you can crack any of the IIMs older than 5 years, it's worth it.

    04:55 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Any work experience works, but when you are sitting for placements in the IIM, then reputed firm name helps. Like I said, brand name is brand name and comes with its share of benefits

    04:56 PM

  • Profile Picture Nitesh Patil

How many candidates are there in your batch for PGP and how much of them having work exp 40-45 months ?? any rough figures ?

    04:57 PM

  • Profile Picture Utsav Sharma

How are Tier 2 MBA colleges? if i not get any Tier 1 colleges.

    04:57 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhil Sharma

My friend(female) has acads 88/78/65. She wants to do MBA this year only. What percentile is needed for IIM U call and what percentile for fair chances to convert ?

    04:58 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

My batch at IIM Udaipur has a strength of 180. The average work experience is close to 19 months. We have about 7%-8% people with work experience more than 40 months. That's a tough estimate and I will have to look at the placecomm sheet to give you exact figures

    04:58 PM

  • Profile Picture Nitesh Patil

Is 42-45 month work ex will have impact on placements?

    04:58 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Utsav I answered your query above.

    04:58 PM

  • Profile Picture Raghav Goel

What parameters should we keep in mind to answer the why mba question for a fresher?

    04:59 PM

  • Profile Picture Utsav Sharma

If i not get any IIM'S and get admission in FORE , Great lakes, TAPAI and IMT-G . Are they worthful?

    05:00 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Mohit I don't want to get personal, but what category she applies from will have a bearing. If she is general and engineer, a CAT score of about 98.5-99.5 should be a good window for her

    05:00 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Nitesh, yes it will. However there are some firms that would prefer that kind of a work experience. But frankly speaking, marketing companies would try to avoid you.

    05:01 PM

  • Profile Picture Kunal Gavali

Does every student gets placed in iim, except abc?

    05:01 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Raghav Goel, I would say that you should understand what you want out of this MBA. Is it for education ? To get a good job ? To take a break from.job ? To get a push in career ?

    05:02 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhil Sharma

Nitesh Patil, my friend's brother is at IIM K and my senior at FMS. Sorry to say bluntly but people with work ex 42-45 are headache for placement committee and they are the last ones to get placed in not so good firms.

    05:02 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Utsav, that's a very personal question. I think the answer would defer for each individual based on their aspirations. I for one did not even apply to any private college. But you can have a very different circumstance and the same decision may not apply to you.

    05:03 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Kunal to tell you the inside truth, no IIM places all students in 3 days as they claim

    05:04 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

And I include ABC in it.

    05:04 PM

  • Profile Picture Raghav Goel

But is it right to blunty say that in front of interview panel that to get a job i want to do mba

    05:04 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

But that's unverified information and I cannot provide you proof.

    05:05 PM

  • Profile Picture Raghav Goel

    Good job *

    05:05 PM

  • Profile Picture Utsav Sharma

What is the best answer of Why MBA?

    05:05 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

All I can say is that the top 75% -80% students are easily placed well while the bottom 20 suffer a little and have to either compromise on package or profile to get placed.

    05:05 PM

  • Profile Picture Nitesh Patil

Ankush , if i want to go for IT\Analytics or operations or consulting ...will 42-45 work ex will be okay or helpful ?? not interested in marketing .

    05:07 PM

  • Profile Picture Santanu Nandi

I'm a civil engineering student. Then what will be the apt answer to, 'why mba'?

    05:07 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Utsav the best answer is the one to are telling yourself in your mind right now. For eg. I did not want a job from an MBA, so I choose an institute which has build reputation as the best for academics without even considering private colleges which might have better placements.

    05:07 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhil Sharma

Ankush, I heard this statement many times that top 50% get above xx lacs, top 30% get above the lacs, what is the parameter of deciding top 10,20,30 %? Means higher GPA means top 10%?

    05:07 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Nitesh operations and consulting generally demand a minimum of 30 months work experience from what I have seen. But it varies firm to firm

    05:08 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhil Sharma

How to decide who belong to top 10%? Top 20%? Etc.

    05:08 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Santanu, that is too small an information window to really say anything. But do read my reply to others on the question and it should give you an idea

    05:09 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Mohit, top 10 percentile means the top 10% highest package winners. There is no other criteria

    05:10 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

So for my batch the highest 18 package winners will be the top 10 percentile

    05:11 PM

  • Profile Picture Utsav Sharma

What is the best answer of Why MBA?

    05:12 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Utsav the best answer is the one to are telling yourself in your mind right now. For eg. I did not want a job from an MBA, so I choose an institute which has build reputation as the best for academics without even considering private colleges which might have better placements

    05:13 PM

  • Profile Picture Hemant Kapile

I currently have 33 months and targeting cat '18 but this will increase my work ex by more 12 months, will that increase my probs while placements

    05:14 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Hemant, the admission policy generally gives you highest weightage between 24-36 months of work experience. After that and below that the points awarded start to taper

    05:15 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

But with ex below 48, the points will be at max 1 less I think

    05:16 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

So don't worry much and focus on acing the CAT exam

    05:16 PM

  • Profile Picture Sunny Murdia

What about the placement in case of Hemant ? I have the same concern

    05:16 PM

  • Profile Picture Utsav Sharma

    .

    05:18 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Sunny like a said earlier in the chat, some firms find work experience above 30-36 months unacceptable like marketing domain oriented. However operation and consulting main jyada issue nahi hota. But yes it will be a little for challenging for you than others

    05:19 PM

  • Profile Picture Sunny Murdia

I will be sitting for IT companies mostly. How is the scene there ?

    05:19 PM

  • Profile Picture Santanu Nandi

I'm from a core engineering background. So, what has driven me to pursue MBA? I really don't know. May be money, corporate life. But I can't tell this during interview. So Plz provide some points?

    05:20 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Utsav, the best answer is to identify your reason for MBA. Don't jump into the wagon because everyone else is jumping and it sounds cool. It's a career decision. Think it out. MBA teaches you a lot of things and depending upon what wall of like you walk into an IIM, your learnings and objectives will be different

At IIM U we have some IT consultancy companies like Deloitte, cognizant, Accenture etc.

    05:21 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Santanu I would suggest that you write down your reasons. That will give you clarity and help seprate the rice from the husk

    05:22 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Knowing yourself is very important to crack ab interview

    05:22 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

    Hello Ashish

    05:23 PM

  • Profile Picture Hopeful Aspirant

I'm currently pursuing CA...could you share the scenario with regards to commerce students/CAs in IIM U?

    05:26 PM

  • Profile Picture Kanika Bhasin

Pursuing Finance Executive course M.com to be completed by 2018 B.Com (Hons) 2014- 67.26%. 12th - 82%. 10th- 71.33%. Work experience - Accenture (4 Months). Internship- 1 Month under CA. Please tell if I give CAT & Other exams that then there might come problem while giving B-schools interview that I hv 2yrs of gap in b/w my graduation & post graduation. Or if I not show my M.com then question will arise that what I hv done in b/w 2014-2018. Please guide me that should I take some work experience or directly apply for MBA without work ex ?

    05:26 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

My batch has 3 CAs and 3 CA final students out of about 36 commerce students and 180 total batch strength

    05:27 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

One of the CAs opted out of placements and the other

    05:27 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Others are placed in financial firms like IIFL in equity research profile.

    05:28 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Hey Kanika, that's a lot of information to process but I'll try to answer you

    05:29 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

I think you should never lie in an interview as the panel is full of experts. So show what you have

    05:29 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Second I am sure you have done some worthwhile things in the Gap years. Turn them into your strengths and use that as your point of differtiatuon in an interview

    05:30 PM

  • Profile Picture Hopeful Aspirant

Thanks :) Could you share if no. of attempts taken to clear CA are taken into consideration while shortlisting admissions?

    05:30 PM

  • Profile Picture Kanika Bhasin

Yes but pls let me know by deeply studying my case as no one is guiding me correctly.

    05:30 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

There is no black and white in an interview. Everything is grey. How you put it across will define how it is taken.

    05:31 PM

  • Profile Picture Kanika Bhasin

    Yes

    05:31 PM

  • Profile Picture Kunal Gavali

    05:31 PM

  • Profile Picture Hopeful Aspirant

@Kanika, from which college have you done Bcom Hons?

    05:32 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Ashish they dont even ask that information in your CAT paper. I will however get in touch with the other two CAs and ask if they were asked such a question in the interview. I for one wasnt asked. I'll answer your question in my next chat

    05:32 PM

  • Profile Picture Ankush Arya

Kunal it really depends upon your interest and not on what I suggest. You should intern in an area of your interest and see how much you like it

    05:33 PM

  • Profile Picture Hopeful Aspirant

So you are a CA too :-D could you share your X/XII/UG/Percentile if you don't mind? And did you clear CA in first attempt?
