    Hi Guys

If a GD resorts to the fish market (mostly it will be), how to make your point? In other words, if 2-3 people are dominating the gd and not letting anyone else speak, how to make a point? By interrupting and drawing attention by raising intensity of voice is the correct way?

    12:40 PM

    Hi Vikas

    12:41 PM

  • Profile Picture Samaksha Vaish

Never raise the intensity of your voice

    12:41 PM

  • Profile Picture Samaksha Vaish

It is not at all advisable. Always continue the gd in a civil manner

What kind of GDs are conducted during placements?

    12:43 PM

  • Profile Picture Samaksha Vaish

If 2-3 people are dominating the GD you can politely say words like - "Okay, you have made your point" or "Adding on to what you were saying" or "I agree with what my friend here is saying but I feel..."

    12:43 PM

  • Profile Picture Samaksha Vaish

Use similar polite phases when you want to interrupt someone and want to speak

    12:43 PM

  • Profile Picture Samaksha Vaish

Hi Harshit, regarding the placements the topics maybe of different types - like current affairs or abstract

    12:44 PM

  • Profile Picture Samaksha Vaish

It can also be a small case where you are given a problem and the group has to come up with a solution

    12:44 PM

What happens in mock gd, when moderator asks to start gd, 3-4 people simultaneously want to begin the gd (I am also one of them), in this case, I raise my voice's intensity and that will make everyone else stop. If it's not a civilized way then what's the alternative?

    12:45 PM

  • Profile Picture Samaksha Vaish

E.g. a company xyz is looking to acquire a company. You will be given profiles of 5-6 companies. The group has to decide which company should xyz acquire

So usually what happens is that you are given 2 minutes to think and then 8 minutes to discuss. Begin slightly before 2 minutes. Usually the person that begins speaking first would continue the introduction

Identify what you are lacking. Is it the content or the confidence. If its the content I would advise you to read more especially for current affairs. Confidence can only be improved by practising. You can also try speaking in front of the mirror on any topic that comes to your mind.

I am from Gujarati background, I can speak fluently and clearly but somehow my voice is affected by regional tone. (Like some tamilians also have regional effect in their voice) Is this okay? Any negative points?

No. As long as you are able to make your point in a coherent manner, accent will not matter

What is the best thing one can do when one is completely unaware about the topic.

If completely unaware then 1) Reframe what others are saying 2) try and conclude the GD. Keep taking notes of important points made and summarize

No further queries, is there anything you want to share from your experience regarding GDs?

Be aware of current affairs topics. Do not lose your calm when it becomes a fish market :)

I have a job in hand of Suzuki, should I join IIM Lucknow if given chance or should I take work experience first? Reason to ask is I am a nonIIT GEM fresher with acads 94/85/69. I heard this community suffers a lot at placements at iims and ends up around 8-9lpa

I will join as a GET, after initial training they will allocate me profile among sales, r&d, production, supply chain management etc. I would prefer SCM. I am from Nirma University.

I know it's off the topic but it would be great if you can genuinely guide me. I am expecting sure shot of 99.5 percentile this time by checking with cat's answer key.

Yaar its a tough call to make. It is not necessary that non IIT, without workex people suffer. I have also seen people from IITs suffer in my batch. Whereas people without any work ex have also done well. Broadly to do well from a placement perspective you need the following - 1. Do well in GDs 2. Have a good CV - e.g. extra curriculars, any national level competition is added advantage. 3. Have good communication skills

    01:25 PM

  • Profile Picture Samaksha Vaish

I would personally prefer to have some 12-18 months of work ex. But that's my call. Will it help you in placements? No one really knows. Also how sure are you of repeating your performance in CAT while working in Maruti?

That's my dilemma. What if I don't get same percentile next year! One last question: in three years or in worst case in 4 years, I will reach at 11.5 lpa with good amount of technical knowledge at Maruti. If you were at my place would you prefer cat or would love to stay at Maruti?

    01:30 PM

Thanx Samaksha, I will be in touch with you for sure once CAT results is out. Thanx again for guidance.
