Hello Abhinav, I heard that nonIIT GEM+fresher, in which I belong, are given least priority in placement etc and to learn things at BSchools is also difficult for them. That makes me to contemplate about my current position. I m in last year of my engineering and got placed in Suzuki Motors. I am expecting 99+ for sure in this CAT. Should I join a BSchool if I convert any good bschool? Or should I take work ex of Suzuki first? (Please guide me From your experience in terms of learning and placement )

Its Abirbhav.. Well, thats completely untrue as far as placements in B-Schools are considered, especially the IIMs.. If you manage to convert a top notch B-School, I would advise you to take up the offer if you are passionate on doing MBA.. There are many non IIT freshers in B-Schools, and they get pretty decent placements, specially for marketing roles.. That doesn't restrict you from taking up other roles though, as the same freshers get placed in the other roles also.. So don't worry

You should refer to placement reports of any institute for getting detailed information like CTC, roles, etc.. Having said that, Baby IIMs are also doing pretty decent in terms of placements so far

In addition to your response of answer. Considering acads 94/85/69, which BSchool can give me assurance of better placemwnt& learning even if I get medium CGPA at IIMs? Or in other words, which BSchool will certainly not make me regret about leaving Suzuki Motors?

No B-School ever gives an assurance of placements.. B-Schools can assure you of quality education.. Having said that, your profile looks good and you can stand a chance of getting call from IIMs if you score decent in CAT.. CGPA and all criteria are fixed by Companies, and Institute has no say in modifying the pre-defined criteria of companies for placements.. If you see the reports of top Institutes, they have a record of achieving almost 100% placements.. So you should consider this aspect also

They are also equally good.. You should evaluate a college not just based on placement CTC, but also student to faculty ratio, infrastructure, location, fees, choice of electives and profiles, roles offered by Companies, International Exposure and Student Exchange etc

If i can't make this time into good bschool, I will go for work ex of Suzuki for 2 years. After training of initial six months, I will be asked to give my priority among supply chain management, marketing&sales, R&D, production etc. Which department will be beneficial if I am clear in my mind to do MBA?

Beneficial? It all depends on what you want to do.. For example, if you are interested in marketing, then you should try get that role or related roles like sales, distribution, promotion etc in your Company.. Else, the roles like SCM, R&D and Production suit well if you wish to take up Operations related roles in MBA..

In response to the previous answer: with a work ex of 2years in marketing or SCM and the number of companies coming for the roles, which department will be more advantageous: marketing or supply chain management? In other words, with work ex of two years, where do I stand a veteran chance: marketing or SCM?

There is no such defined rules, but Companies "usually" prefer freshers for sales and marketing roles in entry level.. More experienced candidates are preferred "generally" for operations roles.. However don't take this as a hard and fast rule, since exceptions are always there who have proven experience or extremely good knowledge about the domain of their choice.. They also get placed in the roles they actually want.. So, keep an open mind before making such decisions

What's your opinion on FMS vs IIMC? Does IIM tag matters in a long run? Or ROI is more important then IIM tag?

    05:11 PM

    Profile Picture Abirbhav Mukherjee

Both are good Institutes.. Don't go for the "tag" business.. Instead, look for detailed placement reports, roles offered by companies, choice of electives and flexibility in getting electives of your choice, location, International exposure, Student Exchange, Student to Faculty Ratio, Faculty profiles, permanent faculty present, guest lectures etc before making such a choice

I may get 99+ but to cross 99.5+ seems difficult from various institutes' percentile prediction. In this case, IIMC & FMS are beyond my reach. One last question: if you were me (nonIIT gem+fresher and a job in hand of Suzuki) then what you would do? Join MDI or SIbm Pune? (both looks achievable from how my cat&snap went) or join Suzuki and give CAT after two years and target only top iims? (I am desperate to do MBA but it's not like urgently)

I would go for the criteria I mentioned above for selecting a B-School.. If any IIM or other Institute satisfied those criteria, then definitely I would have selected that Institute, if I got the offer.. Else, I would have happily worked and gained experience and the applied for MBA..

Is there anything which you would like to asvise from your experienceabout inside life at IIMs so that they can mentally be prepared to face realities ?

    05:31 PM

    Profile Picture Abirbhav Mukherjee

Inside an IIM, life will be quite hectic and filled with work to be honest.. You will be required to smartly manage time, else you will be totally lost in the work load of the classes, clubs and committees, skill development, recreation, etc.. However on the brighter side, you will get learning like never before.. In an IIM, students are required to read all the pre-reads and solve the cases before coming to class.. If you do that, then only will you be able to understand what the Professor is saying in a better way and quickly grasp the subject.. Apart from that, we also have clubs and committees where you may hold a position of responsibility based upon your academic domain interest (Finance, Marketing, etc) or non academic interest (CSR, Literary, Sports, etc).. Overall, the IIM Life is something one should experience.. It will always be worth it

Adding on: Punctuality is of utmost importance.. You should never be late to class, or during submissions, not even by 1 second.. Punctuality is non negotiable
