75 Days To CAT - How To Maximize Your Score

75 Days to the D-Day! How many mocks are you taking and how many more should you take? How can you increase your speed and accuracy in these many days? What should be an ideal score at this point in time? Should you start new topics? How do you make sure that you make the most of these remaining days? These and many such questions to be answered in this live chat by Srinivas Akkapeddi, IIT Dhanbad and IIM Indore Alumnus. He has been coaching students for CAT for close to 6 years.

    01:24 PM

    Profile Picture Srinivas Akkapeddi

firstly, you need to identify why are the scores less? how many attempts? how many corrects? how many incorrects? are you missing out on easy questions? are you spending more time on difficult questions in the exam? the mock analysis has to be done on these lines

    01:50 PM

Sir please discuss strategies to handle reading comprehension. Whenever I attempt RC I'm never sure about the answer. I'm always confused between the options. So I have to depend more on luck in RCs than logic. Please suggest some ways on how can I overcome this.Thanks.

in quant and verbal where you are not scoring much, you need to figure out if you are leaving out easy questions or not. The idea is you should scanning the whole section once before solving questions. Also all easy questions MUST be attempted. If you are not doing this, you are spending time on unproductive questions which has to be cut down

    01:56 PM

Vidhi, once again, please read my comments on similar query. Score low is like saying you have a pain in body. You have to get to which part, what kind of pain etc as a doctor. Similarly, you have to give me some idea on your scores. Usually I advise students to check 1. Are you attempting all easy questions? 2. What is your accuracy in MCQ and non MCQ section wise? 3. Are you missing out of questions that are from your topic of liking? these three points will shed a lot of light on your actual problem

    01:59 PM

First, even on luck it doesn't mean that you will not be able to eliminate at least one possibility. If you can eliminate two possibilities, then your chances get even more better. What has been your strike rate?

Break up of RC and VA? I mean how many of these 15-20 are from RC and how many are from VA?

    02:01 PM

  • Profile Picture Amit Sharma

i usually attempt most of the va questions but am able to get only 40% correct...also in RC passages i am not able to recall the passsage as soon as i have read it and have to read it again and again which takes up a lot of time

    02:03 PM

    Profile Picture Srinivas Akkapeddi

Then in RC, which ever option you decide on, mark the other one! :D But on a serious note, normally verbal attempts should be around 25 and above. While you are attempting 3-4 questions in VA, how much time are you spending on these? Next test, why don't you try leaving VA and spending all time on RC?

    02:03 PM

  • Profile Picture Saakhi Kaur

In every RC passage , I get 2-3 questions wrong and in parajumbles, I get around 50 % wrong.

Clearly you have a problem of excessive reading speed without comprehending. Try keeping the attempts to 25 as a hard rule and go slow on passages. You can look at attempting around 18 from RC and 6 -7 from VA. Try if this helps in your next mock

    02:05 PM

  • Profile Picture Saakhi Kaur

So its almost the same for Rc and Non-Rc both.

    02:05 PM

    02:05 PM

Clearly your accuracy in VA is much better than in your RC. Try attempting all 10 from VA and around 15 from RC. Also in RC, go slow on passages. Pick the passages where the topic is of your liking (if possible).

    02:09 PM

Classical case of exam pressure. You are capable of much better performance but the exam pressure is bogging you down. Why don't you keep a hard stop of 2 min for each question in quant. after 2 min, you will leave the question for sure. within 1 min if you dont get logic, then definitely leave and dont even bother about it later.

    02:11 PM

  • Profile Picture Vidhi Agarwal

In VA, I tend to leave out easy questions on para forming; in LRDI I am weak in Tables and Sequencing; in Quant I leave easy questions from geometry and I haven't been able to improve on these topics.

    02:11 PM

  • Profile Picture Vidhi Agarwal

    02:10 PM

    Profile Picture Srinivas Akkapeddi

Parajumbles are not recommended in the present format. of the 4, 1 will be easy, 2 moderate and 1 difficult (last two years). usually 1 easy is what majojrity get. The other 3 are usually got wrong by students because of non MCQ. I suggest you dont waste time on those 3. So read all 4 but you will feel 1-2 are easier to do than the other 2-3. solve these 1-2 in PJ and leave the rest. This will save a lot of time

    02:13 PM

  • Profile Picture Vidhi Agarwal

My accuracy is much lower for non MCQs.

    02:12 PM

    Profile Picture Srinivas Akkapeddi

Then don't bother with non MCQs. Spend more time on MCQs! It's obvious. Maximize your score by giving time to the type of questions where your accuracy is higher!

    02:11 PM

    Profile Picture Srinivas Akkapeddi

Are you leaving out easy questions because you don't know the topic or because you are not reading them? If it is the former, then you should spend time on each topic so that atleast the basics are covered. If the problem is the latter, then it's a case of spending time on unnecessary questions. You should spend 7-8 min in Quant only on question browsing. Mark easy questions in these 7-8 min and solve only these. This way, you will not miss easy questions.

your 45 in VA section is good. 45 in DI is very good. the improvement clearly has to be in quant. little scope in VA also. My recommendation is you should go for a minimum of 27-28 attempts in VA with around 70% accuracy. DI is fine. Probably you can try to optimize time and get 2-3 questions more so ill not comment much. Quant you should keep your attempts at 25-27 with 80% accuracy. So look at the paper as 1 hour for 25/27 questions. Make your mind such that mentally you are letting go of the 7-9 questions. Then identify which are these 7-9 that you will not touch. this should be done in first 5 min. In the next 4-5 min, make a list of questions you will definitely solve and list of questions you will solve later. Thse two category questions only should consist of the 25 or so of Quant for your attempts.

RC questions can be categorized into types: primary purpose agree disagree inference summary synonyms antynoms quotes tone and mood critical reasoning type direct Usually you will be good in some types and bad in other types. So try attempting only the types you are good at and leave the other type of questions.

DI LR section in the last two years of CAT was very difficult. Anyone attempting 20 with 16 correct would have done an excellent job. So look at the paper as having only 5 sets. Choose these 5 sets carefully. To do this, spend the first 7-8 min in identifying the sets for you!

anything around 35-40 per section and overall of 110 is okay for now. you can easily improve this to 45 per section and around 140 overall.
