Hi Arun, All the more reason why you should use your time to prepare for CAT this year. You have almost 45 days before you begin. And then doing Mock CATs and a prep along with Infy is what is recommended!

Hi Vartika, To get 99 percentile last year, one had to get 153 marks out of 300! Which is just about 51% of the overall marks. Clearly, with FIVE MONTHs to go for the CAT, the time is more than sufficient! As for Strategy - it has to be two pronged : Prep Plan and Exam Plan. Please refer to my articles on these!

Sridhar, You have about 5 months to prepare for CAT and it is NOT at all late. All it requires is consistent preparation! And if one does that, even a solid 3 to 4 months should be enough. The only challenge area would be Verbal and RC and for that you would need a daily prep/improvement.

Hi Arun, Improvement in Verbal and RC requires you to improve three areas 1. Vocabulary - Despite the CAT exam not giving direct questions on Vocab, it is imperative that you increase your vocab! Daily learning 5 to 10 new words would do the trick. We have close to 150 days and you can learn anything between 750 to 1500 words! 2. Grammar - Everything that you read - Parajumbles, Summary or RC would require Grammar. Hence that is one area you have to prepare over the next two months 3. Reading Speeds : Though there is enough time in the exam (60 minutes and 34 questions), having a good reading speed would help tremendously. Hence, make it a point to read for 15 minutes every day. Your Reading Speeds would improve by at least 100 words per min wpm) Do this and take the MOCKS seriously, you will make it!

Frankly, that depends on what is your present level of Prep. However, for the next two months, I would suggest at least 20 hours per week. In September and October, the same can be increased to 25 hours per week. and in the last month about 40 hours per week

    01:56 PM

    Profile Picture Vistamind Counselling

Yes, if you have 3.5 years experience, you should write CAT. At the same time, you should also start thinking of GMAT (probably write that too). So that you have a 2 year and a 1 year option available.

Akshay - You can apply to ISB, SPJain (One Year Program), GLIM, all the PGPX programs of IIMs (provided you have 5 years plus of experience). All European BSchools offer a One year program. And all the top BSchools take GMAT!

    01:59 PM

    Profile Picture Vistamind Counselling

Definitely YES. However, the final decision depends on where else you get. For eg. if one gets into SpJain, NITIE, MDI ,IIFT etc, then these have to be preferred over Baby IIMs (as you call them!)

    02:09 PM

    Profile Picture Vistamind Counselling

Hi Ali, the best time would be when you are in the Pre-Final Year. That way, you get a clear ONE year to Prep. There will be a lot of disturbances in the Prep because of exams and projects. Hence a clear one year would be useful (starting anytime from Sept to Dec of the year prior to the CAT year)

Ali, Frankly, it depends on the individual's prep level. However, If one is writing CAT 2017, then about 20 hours per week for the next two months are required to get closer to your goal!

You are doing well in the AIMCATs. Continue to give time every week for your prep and don't let up! As for the exam strategy, it is important to know your strengths and weaknesses before commenting. Since you are NOT a fresher, it would be unwise for me to give you any strategy without knowing your present levels! As for IIML conducting the CAT, we cannot judge anything until they come out with a pattern. Anything else would be pure speculation and it is a waste of time.

Thank You Sir, I am pretty good with quant. Verbal is the weakest part. I used to be good with DI LR but from 2015, this section is coming at a whole new level as was in recent AIMCAT 1819. What can I do for this DI LR?

    02:25 PM

  • Profile Picture Vistamind Counselling

Kapeesh, Remember a simple thing. If the paper is difficult then the cutoff would be LOW. As was the case in CAT 2016 and CAT 2015. So in such an exam, you have to do probably 4 our 5 sets perfectly to get a 99 percentile. It is your ability to judge the difficulty level and adjusting your attempts accordingly!

Hitesh, you may have to take up a job before you go to the Interviews. It would be very difficult to defend idleness (though you are preparing for CAT)
