Hi Karan! I am a recent BMS graduate. I gave a serious attempt at CAT last year and got a disappointing 91%ile. I have resumed working hard again this year, with improving mock scores. I however am facing a kind of a phobia for algebra. I can solve sums with linear equations but as soon as quadratic comes on screen, I tend to skip that. Geometry, arithmetic, numbers are some of my strengths. Do you think there could be an issue in CAT with this mindset? I have tried real hard and solved Algebra sums several times but I prefer not even looking at them in mocks. Pls advise. (My target is ABCKLI, or none)

Suppose I do 3 chs and I am able to solve decently if any question pops up from these chs, but after a month, I miss out on few details in those questions. So how to revise and keep things on fingertips

I assume you are in the initial stages of your preparation, of course mock level questions are at a completely different level from your study materials. It would be best to practice and continuously revise questions from Past year CAT papers (2000-2008), after some time you will begin to see the difference.

Well 91%ile is decent, try to solve past year mock and CAT quadratic questions, If you have a phobia or if you are uncomfortable with a particular topic, try to solve it at the end of the exam when you might have some time remaining. Always see the detailed solutions after the end of the mock, I am sure you will find that the questions are not that tough but just have a particular trick associated with them. Slowly your phobia will go away.

Whenever you are solving questions from any study material try to make notes related to that particular topic, Its important you write down any new/interesting concepts encountered (write down the entire question/solution if u can) and whenever you are about to give a mock revise from those notes. I tried this and it worked for me.

    01:42 PM

  • Profile Picture avpotdar1234

How should we analyse our mock score

    01:33 PM

    Profile Picture Karan Kakkar

Never take the mock score at its absolute value but rather its relative value i.e if you are improving from your last mock score that would mean you are doing well. try to look for strengths and weaknesses from your mock scores like in which sections you have high accuracy, speed and which sections give you a negative return in terms of the time spent. Then simply capitalize on your strengths and improve on your weaknesses using a lot of practice.

    01:34 PM

    Profile Picture Karan Kakkar

Practice the Quant section in a time-constrained environment i.e give a lot of sectional tests. Doing this prepares your mind to solve questions in 2-3 minutes and over time with practice your attempts will increase.

    Profile Picture Karan Kakkar

    1. Past year CAT questions (2000-2008) 2. Sectional and Mock questions (Both Current and Past) 3. Level 1 and Level 2 of Quantum CAT by arihant is also very good 4. Advance Level modules of TIME/CL/IMS

    01:46 PM

I have done geometry from arun sharma but i m still not confident in geometry and i always skip geometry questions during mock . Can you guide me through what should i do .

    01:39 PM

    Profile Picture Karan Kakkar

Geometry is by far the toughest topic in the Quant section, However since it is asked heavily one cannot afford to simply skip it while solving CAT. I was also never really comfortable with geometry so I used to solve it towards the end after I have exhausted all the easy/medium level questions from other topics. Don't develop a phobia regarding geometry, always see the detailed solutions of mock questions and make notes. I actually ended up solving 3-4 questions related to geometry in the real CAT but of course I solved them towards the end.

    01:47 PM

    Profile Picture Karan Kakkar

Hi, Quant is the most practice intensive among the 3 sections. The reason that you might be attempting and scoring less in mocks could be that the level of questions asked in mocks would be considerably higher than that of asked in Basic materials. Try to practice from last year CAT and Mock questions, also learn the art of spotting easy/medium level questions in a mock. you will acquire that ability after a lot of practice so don't give up and keep grinding!!

  • Profile Picture burhanjw

Can you please advice on how to divide my time daily/weekly or monthly between different topics of quant for practice?

    02:00 PM

    Profile Picture Karan Kakkar

I don't have a very definitive answer related to this, i would want you to ensure that you don't have any weakness in quant as you do not know which topic might get easier questions and if you are short on practice you won't be able to jump on them and solve them quickly. So try to divide your time equally, give slightly more weightage to geometry and number system since they take more time to master. All the best!!

IIMs and many other top b schools have sectional cutoffs (90+ or 85+) so it will depend on the particular college, try to be good in all the sections according to me.
