It was that phase of my life where I was making checklists for the first time, packing bags, meeting all those friends with whom I had lost touch in the past two years, receiving calls from family wishing me luck for the new phase in my life.
With a bag full of clothes, my mind full of inhibitions, heart full of excitement and eyes full of tears, the flight took off along with my dreams. Two hours later, I found myself in a different city with people of different dialects, beliefs, and values.
Dragging a suitcase, my backpack behind me, and with a ukulele in one hand, I went to my hostel, my home for the next four years. I was eager to meet my roommate. I wanted to see whether everything I pictured about college, hostel and roommates were all true or just my whimsical fantasies. I entered a 200 sq ft room with 4 walls and a small bathroom. I had to make this dull space my home. Then met my roommate as she scanned me from top to bottom and judged my entire history right there.
"Deep breathe in, deep breathe out. Life is a roller coaster that only goes up, my friend”, I told myself, smiled and started this journey.
College started with new notebooks, new pen case (which lasted just for a week), newly ironed clothes. Woke up at 6:30 am for an 8 am class, had breakfast and got ready. Trust me, this happened only for the first few days of the semester. Afterward, we all used to wake up at 7:45 am for an 8 am class, and put our inner athlete to test.
Breakfast, what’s that? This soon became the daily morning routine. In my college, we work 6 days a week, with lecture hours from 8 am to 5:30 pm. 6 theory subjects and 3 labs a semester where we have to maintain 75% attendance in every subject. Yes, 75%.
I was in a class of 80 odd students. Soon I made a decent bunch of friends (at least I thought they are decent at that time) in my class. I must say, I was extremely lucky to get an amazing bunch of people in my hostel as well, who soon became family. I only had 1 room, but I knew at least 4 rooms whose doors were always open to me. I also made some senior friends and bought books from them for the first year.
This was the basic outline of my college and college life in that initial phase. Fasten your seatbelt, because it is going to be a crazy ride ahead.
