Earlier this year, Airbnb changed its name in China which drew some flak online. Some say that the name, written in English as Aibiying, could be mistaken to mean "to love Bing" (side note - who uses Bing anyway, leave alone love it :-o). The actual meaning that Airbnb intended for it is "welcome each other with love". Others have pointed out that the name is awkward to pronounce and could be mistaken for a sex service!
I suppose MARKET RESEARCH is not just important for the product, but product NAMES too.
Since we're talking of product names, you must have already heard of the classic faux-pas by the car company Chevrolet, when they launched their model Chevy Nova in South America. You will find several blog posts online about how the spanish-speakers translated this as "No-Go" or "It Doesnt Go", which of course no one wants in a car. But there's only one problem with this story - It didnt happen! The reason for Nova's failure were completely different and this name faux-pas is just a MYTH.
Btw, we at Konversations too thought of a potentially confusing product name - did you like our meme in the featured pic? :P
