Does it feel like documentary night? We’ve got the best pick for you.
Jon Alpert’s most recent documentary puts together 45 years worth of footage of his travels and interactions in Cuba from his earliest visit in the 70’s to the most recent in 2016. You’ll follow his lens as it turns to his friends, their families, local citizens and Fidel Castro (yes, you heard me right) in what is a very candidly shot documentary. You’ll experience the drastic change in Cuban policies, economy, and social construct as the documentary proceeds, with an insight like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Jon Alpert witnessed in person and shot Cuba’s socialism in the early ‘70s, and the Mariel Bay boatlift, when over 100,000 Cubans fled the island, accompanied by inmates released from prisons and insane asylums in the ‘80s, and he also returned to cover the hardships Cuba faced at the fall of the Soviet Union in the early ‘90s. This master project is born from what is 1000 hours of footage that Alpert collected over half a century. Take a seat and watch Cuban history unfold through the lens of a cameraman who tells a tale so intimate that you’ll be left with many emotions. You can watch the video here.
