The current admission rate in 2017 is around 0.92% in IITs: out of the about 1,200,000 candidates who apply for JEE Main, 11,000 make it. This means that out of every 100 students, less than one person makes it.
Which means that 99.2% students face IITism on a daily basis.
However, there are people who don’t let IITism (Prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination against students from non-IIT/NIT engineering colleges) affect them when it came to their entrepreneurial dreams. Let’s look at some of them.
In a country with widespread poverty and over a billion people, there is a huge gap between the producers and consumers of healthcare services. Practo was founded in 2008 with a vision to make access to medical information easier for the general public, and in turn, help improve human health and longevity.
Practo is a one-stop solution for any patient with Internet access. It provides detailed profiles of doctors and allows patients to see recommendations from other patients. It also allows patients to order medicines and maintain their own medical records.
Founder Shashank ND from NIT Surathkal has earned himself a place in Forbes 30 under 30 list of young influential people to watch, and Fortune 40 under 40 most promising business leaders in India. Guess not going to IIT doesn’t decide your fate!
2. PayTM
“You can only have first mover advantage if you ever moved in the first place”
Anonymous
PayTm needs no introduction. The digital wallet company had a massive stroke of luck in November ‘16 when BJP demonetized major currency notes, but Vijay Shekhar Sharma had established that he is a genius way back when he was in college when he made a website and sold it for $1 million. (indiasite.net)
Unlike many other successful entrepreneurs, Sharma didn’t get into IIT and studied at Delhi College of Engineering.
3. Freshworks (formerly Freshdesk)
Star entrepreneurs can be found in the most unexpected places. Sometimes, the seeds are sown when they are sitting in the most humble cubicle of a software development company. Girish Mathrubootham, an engineer from Shanmugha College of Engineering & Technology (SSCET), led a pretty standard life when a bad experience as a customer made him realize the massive space in Customer Support Systems. As they say, the rest is history! Freshworks started as Freshdesk, offering a single customer support software, and went on to build an acquire more tech products. Today, the company employs 1000 people across 5 countries, providing services to more than 1,50,000 companies.
4. Fullonwedding (formerly Fullonshaadi)
Unlike what the name suggests, Fullonwedding is not a Band Baaja Baarat inspired startup; there’s a twist in this story. Fullonwedding comprehensively lists all wedding service providers and eases the massively stressful job of wedding planning to just a few clicks.
Started by Shalabh Jhalawad, an engineer from Medicaps Institute From Technology And Management, Indore, and his wife, Khushbu Jagwani Jhalawad, an IIFT alumna, Fullonwedding has raised an undisclosed sum from a group of marquee investors.
5. All Events.in
Co-founded by Amit Panchal (LD College of Engineering alumnus) and Ruchit Patel (LDRP Institute of Technology and Research alumnus), All Events.in is on a mission to make event discovery easier than ever. All events.in covers more than 100 million events held in more than 30,000 cities for more than 4 million people every month. Guess somebody trumped the IITism and did pretty good for themselves, right?
I guess what we are saying is…
Limits exist only in your mind.
