While we are in 12th grade, we all live in a delusional bubble and believe that life goes uphill after board exams are over. The freedom that is involved in college life lures everybody and suddenly, after a point, we really can’t resist the temptation and want to be in college as soon as possible. We are made to believe that College is all sunshine and rainbows but nobody talks about the thunderstorms that occur in between. This article is going to break a few myths and address certain things you would not want to hear about campus life.
1) Myth: “Study Load” decreases
It appears that college involves relatively less study time because we see college students in markets and malls, bunking their lectures. The truth is that they are not spoon fed anymore. College professors come, give lectures and leave. It is upon students what they make out of that. The study load is only realized when exams are around the corner! If anything, the study load probably increases.
2) Myth: You don’t need to actually GO to college
Students at the school have a utopian image of college in their heads. They consider it to be a place they can escape from - to bunk, at their own convenience. But there is a lot more to college life. In a lot of colleges, you have minimum attendance criteria that have to be met, in order to be eligible to appear for exams. So, you probably won’t be getting rid of lectures, classrooms and teachers anytime soon.
3) Myth: You study only those things that interest you
No! You will still have to study things that are in no way related to your careers. No matter how much you think you are capable of learning or knowing, your first year will still be just a lot of basics.
4) Myth: You are going to make amazing friends
Well, this is true, you WILL make amazing friends. But, it will take time to find them. Trial and error is how you will make friends. The first month of college will mostly witness you talking to people you will regret knowing a few months down the line. There might be days when you will be lonely, but that too shall pass.
5) Myth: College = Partying
Lol. On most days of your college life, it is not partying that will keep you up, but assignments and their deadlines!
6) Myth: Financial independence = Splurging Time!
When you live with your parents, going to McDonald's means ordering a happy meal or combos, with all the frills added. In college, you are going to be content with 2 McAloo Tikkis! You will realize that partying (or other activities) needs money and after a point, you will prioritize a good meal over a night out.
7) Myth: College trips with friends are just about fun
This one’s not a myth. They sure are a helluva lot of fun. But if you are going with friends, you will realize how hard it is to settle on a place, because earlier you would go wherever your parents planned. Now, you suddenly find yourself figuring out not just place but also budget, tickets, getting to places on time… phew!
8) Myth: There is a lot of personal freedom
Yes, but nobody will tell you that freedom also means waking up half an hour earlier, ironing your clothes, going to ATMs, banks, hospitals and grocery shopping – and figuring all of this out, ALONE.
9) Myth: 4 years is a long time – you can figure out what you want to do later
4 years fly by! By the time you blink your eyes, 1st year will be over. By the time you get over the shock of first year getting over so fast, 2nd year will be over. You will spend your 3rd year ranting about everything and placement and just like that 4th year and college life will be over.
If you still wouldn’t have figured out what you want to do ahead – welcome to the club!
10) Myth: You will get your dream job after this course
The truth is, in fact, that after college ends, you will be willing to take a job in any field that your course leads you to. There will come a point when your pocket will be ashamed of sourcing its contents from your parents!
