That is, you need have 3-4 extra-ordinary achievements, such as 'winner of a business competition', or 'Top 50 batch rank holder'. 3. Finance knowledge does help certain aspects of consulting.

Hi Nikhil, I am an electrical engineer working in IT. I have learnt fuckall in B.Tech. I have read some economics (tried reading Picketty, Raghuram Rajan, Paul Krugman) with some amount of comprehension. I try reading Mint (again with some amount of comprehension) and the Hindu. What do I choose? Finance or Marketing. Does basic understanding of economics matter at all? I feel clueless about what to aim for, because I don't know what I am aiming for. What should I be doing for the wat-pi?

    1. Yes, you can go for Finance 2. For finance, conceptual learning is important too because there are a lot of financial models which you need to learn. Analytical skills also play a role for Finance. 3. UG doesn't play a huge role.

Hey Nikhil, I am a fresher with average performance in engineering at an older IIT. I have been into event organising and extra-currics (moderately though). Also, I have done an internship at a manufacturing giant under the domain and Supply Chain/Logistics. My performance was fine and I got a pre-placement offer. I liked the work as well. Now, I am interesting in Marketing and Operations, the former in line with my non-academic skills and the latter in line with my internship experience. Which would you recommend? Also, which can be justified better in the PI round (if I make it :P) ?

Nothing as such Saikat 1. Business studies is about how to sell your technical skills. You might have to sell a radio or a tyre etc. So Engineers do have a lot of scope for an MBA. 2. To know what marketing or Finance etc is , you need to research a bit. UG doesn't play a major role here. 3. People with IT work ex can be great fit for an MBA. IT services is basically in the B2B field. How services are sold, and how customers are maintained in a B2B firm are interesting. Try and find out of these work in your firm.

    1. Operations, because you have a proof to show your worth/interest in that field which is the internship. 2. Extra- currics is something most of the candidates have, so though it is a good indicator for marketing, it would'nt be a differentiating factor. 3. Try and win some marketing realted biz competitions, to get a better chance.

    1. Weigh the Pros and Cons. Having more work experience will balance out your average acads. Quitting your job may give you a better percentile. 2. I would suggest continuing with the job. You have a back up plus the role of a Site Manager can help you with the Sales and Strategy streams.

    1. They look for 'spikes' in your resume. Something like a winner of a biz competition, or top 50 rank holder etc.. 3-4 of these iin your resume is a must for consulting. Work experience will also matter. There will be a lot of client handling, stress, analytical skills, and presentation skills involved in a consulting job. Good communication skills is a must. Outgoing personality will be preferred. 3. Strategy mgmnt, economics and operations are good streams for consultiing.
