How to excel in entrances post CAT

If you CAT didn't go too well, it's not the end of the world. There are other exams that can still get you into a top Bschool! Today we shall discuss about the exams you should focus on post CAT and how those entrances can land you at a great B-school. We will look at how to maximise score after getting past the tricky quant of XAT and current affairs for SNAP. Join me Aroop Sanyal from IIM Trichy at 8pm today.

Hi Everyone! Today we shall focus on how to remodel your strategies to be able to focus on SNAP and XAT post the CAT.

Hi Aroop, How to manage XAT and SNAP simultaneously? Since both of them are fundamentally different..

    02:31 PM

  • Profile Picture Aroop Sanyal

Hi Smiriti, So XAT will require some dedicated practise in terms of the quant as the XAT questions are concept heavy as well as time consuming. SNAP would be relatively easier and you need to focus on speed for SNAP quant.

I believe a thorough practise for CAT and XAT should have you in the clear for SNAP.

For GK brush all current affairs of 2016, which has everything to do with sports, events like the booker prize, nobel prize etc, mergers acquisitions, new tech, etc.

Hi Aroop, what kind of difference in approach is required for Xat in comparison to Cat with respect to Quant?

    02:36 PM

  • Profile Picture Smriti Joinwal

Right.. I'll follow the same.. Thankyou.. :) One more thing, how to prepare for XAT since we don't have any consolidated material for the same.

Hi Anoop can you please give some tips for GK preparation? I am able to score well in all the sections except GK.

Hi Anoop, I am expecting around 95%le in CAT.. I think I can improve it in next attempt. Should I try one more time??

which areas are important for xat quant??

    02:38 PM

  • Profile Picture Aroop Sanyal

Hi Krishna, XAT quant is generally a little tricky in terms of quant, as they tend to be a little calculation heavy. I suggest look at past years cut-offs carefully and play to that advantage. It is very rare that people solve most of the problems in the quant section, hence aim for the cutoffs and ensure enough time is left for the other sections.

Try looking at previous years papers. Very often they are on similar lines. As in pattern of questions. You could drop a mail to aroop.p15074@iimtrichy.ac.in and I can send you some old materials if I have some on me.

Hi Annanya. For current affairs I use this site called Indian Business Quiz. I can provide you some other links as well. Drop me a mail at aroop.p15074@iimtrichy.ac.in

Hi Bosco, the real trick is getting the sectional cutoffs cleared so time management is an important skill for your XAT. Try to balance your scores in all sections and use last year's cutoff as a datum.

Hi Piyush, If this is your 1st or 2nd attempt you can definitely look at another attempt. Around 97 though should get you a lot of decent calls. Depends what your final goal is set at. :)

    02:43 PM

  • Profile Picture Piyush Hemnani

my 2nd attempt.. I am looking for old iims only.. I haven't even applied for xat snap or anything else..

Then you can give a shot another time. But just assess where your shortcomings were this time and to what extent you can bridge the gap. The hardest part is to go from 97%tile to 99.5%tile.

    02:50 PM

  • Profile Picture Aroop Sanyal

Also I would suggest giving XAT and SNAP if not anything else but as a backup. Dont have to join but giving the exams also helps to get better wrt practise and time management.

Hi aroop, I am expecting around 92-95% in cat.. I wanted to know about colleges I should apply to! Also how is dse, DU for mba(IB)?

    02:54 PM

  • Profile Picture Aroop Sanyal

Hi Tushan, I'd suggest give it another shot. If you can pull your score to around 210+ that would really increase your chances. As for IIFT, the cutoffs generally hover around the 44-48 range. You can find a details analysis here: https://insideiim.com/iift-2016-analysis-and-preliminary-cutoffs/

what calls can you expect at 90 percentile in cat?

    03:00 PM

  • Profile Picture Aroop Sanyal

Hi Rajat, in that range you should apply for IMI Delhi, FORE, LIBA, KJsom, DoMs IITM which come to the back of my mind.

    03:01 PM

thank you @aroop .. yes i read the article , the cut off is between 45.6- 46.3

  • Profile Picture Pankaj Mulla

Can i get good colleges from CMAT and MHCET?

    03:13 PM

  • Profile Picture Aroop Sanyal

Hi Pankaj, you can write CMAT and SNAP. There's also NMAT that allows multiple attempts.

    03:14 PM

  • Profile Picture Aroop Sanyal

Yes, CMAT and MHCET also has a lot of good colleges. I would say focus on CMAT though as JB, KJsom, Wellinkar all accept CMAT scores.

    03:16 PM

  • Profile Picture Aroop Sanyal

I would suggest everyone to continue giving mocks just as you all must have given for CAT. The is the best practise to get the time management right and keep a tab at your strengths and weaknesses.

    03:26 PM

  • Profile Picture Aroop Sanyal

XAT would need additional practise for Quant so solve a lot of sums. At the same time try to have a time estimate for each section as sectional cutoff generally create a problem for all.

    03:28 PM

  • Profile Picture Aroop Sanyal

As far as SNAP is concerned, the number of questions will be high but the difficulty levels are on the lower side, so ensure that you dont waste too much time on any particular question. Aim for maximum solved questions for SNAP.

    03:30 PM

GK would require you to go through all the current affairs of 2016 and all prizes and international days which are asked pretty often.
