MBA From A New IIM - Is It Worth It?

Did the new IIMs fail to cash in on the brand name? Is it worth joining a new IIM or one should reappear the CAT? Should you undermine the advantage of the brand name? These and a lot more queries will be answered by Nikhita Basti from IIM Ranchi. IIM Ranchi is the ninth IIM established in the year 2010.

So Kedar, I would first suggest you to evaluate your options before taking the decision. 1) Your expectations out of those 1/2 years from a B school 2) Your CAT score 3) Your previous academic performances 4) Whether you are a fresher or with work ex. 5) If worked then the quality of your work experience

ok how different are new IIMs compared to old IIMs in terms of learning and placements ?

    02:45 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhita Basti

@Abhijeet , As far as placements are concerned, you can refer to the placement reports published on the official websites of the institutes. Currently at IIM Ranchi, the average package for 2014-2016 batch is 15.14 lpa as mentioned in the report

Hello Nikhita Basti Mam A very good evening to you :) Mam I have queries regarding the selection and expected percentile criteria Mam In 10th my score is 9.8 Cgpa 12th-92.75 (all the 5 subjects) graduation till 4th sem-72.75 Category-NC-OBC Mam moreover I m pursuing BA(vocational studies ) which is the only unique course offered by delhi university and is particularly available in my college only..This year while filling the CAT form..I found out that they have made separate discipline for BA(VOCATIONAL)..Moreover like 2 or 3 guys are with me who are giving cat from vocational course..would it benefit me anyhow?

Coming to the ROI, the fees of new IIMs as compared to the older private B schools in India is far lesser. This year the fees for IIM Ranchi was 13.6 lakhs. So in this comparison and keeping in mind the average package of placements, I would say that the ROI is really good

    02:51 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhita Basti

Good Evening Shyan, So looking at your profile and the course that you are pursuing in your under graduation, I would say that you have a huge advantage in terms of being a non engineer. In the admission criteria of most of the new IIMs, there are extra points awarded for being a non engineer, so you have an advantage

    02:54 PM

  • Profile Picture Shyan Paul

Ok thankyou mam :) You gave me a new hope :) and mam considering my course is unique as less applicants would be there in my course..Can I expect a call at 95+?

Hello Nikitha, I just have one query - How are the placements of candidates having more than 3 years of experience??

    02:59 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhita Basti

@Kedar , So in terms of learning I would say that you wouldn't find much of a difference as the course followed by the New IIMs are at par with the older IIMs. And placements, of course there is a difference and it is also unfair to compare 5-6 year old institutes with 5 decades old institutes

    03:00 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhita Basti

@ Shyan ... Considering that you belong to NC-OBC and also a non engineer, I think you can expect call from New IIMs at a percentile of 95 in CAT. But nothing can be said with certainty. Give your best in the exam. Anyway You are most welcome :)

what category of schools are good for mba??

Hey Nikhita, what is your opinion about MBA in HR of IIM Ranchi?

    03:04 PM

  • Profile Picture Prakhar Maheshwari

Hi, Nikhita. I am a non engineer ( economics ). I just want to get a fair idea about how the cut offs are for new IIMs for non engibeers. Do they call candidates at around 95% ile? If they do, how is conversion rate? Moreover, if not 95, how low could the cut off for call be?

    03:06 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhita Basti

@ Shashikant ... Currently, we have at least 10 % of our batch out of 180 students here at IIM Ranchi with more than 3 years of experience. Though I would like to add a caveat that for few profiles like Sales, students with less that 2 years of experience are preferred, however I don't see any problems in securing placements in the other domains of MBA

    03:06 PM

  • Profile Picture Bosco Sylvester

    how is iim jammu??

    03:06 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhita Basti

@Prakhar, The cut offs would also depend on the category that you belong to. My observation is that a 96 percentile in CAT, belonging to general category, non engineer candidate has a very good chance of conversion at new IIMs

    03:09 PM

  • Profile Picture Kedar Kallimath

what is the exact seat intake at IIMR ?

    03:09 PM

  • Profile Picture Prakhar Maheshwari

@Nikhita that sounds good. I can check the boxes for those - General and non engineer. Thank you.

    03:11 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhita Basti

@ Bosco. I think I would not be able to give an authentic answer to that question because I have no much knowledge on the institute. However since the upcoming batch would be the first to graduate out of the institute, there are pros and cons. So you must weigh your priorities and take a decision

Hi Nikitha, I'm currently working for over an year at a strategy consulting firm. And I want to continue my career in consulting after MBA. But I'm not confident enough to score 99+ %le, so what other IIMs should i consider other than top 3, if i should have a fair chance of getting into any Big4 consulting companies like Bain, BCG, McKinsey?

    03:13 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhita Basti

@Adish, If you are really interested to pursue an MBA in HR then in my opinion of the ranks of top B schools providing HR course would be in the following manner:- XLRI > TISS > MDI Gurgaon > IIM Ranchi > Other Institutes

    03:15 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhita Basti

@Kedar Currently, the PGDM consists of 135 students and PGDHRM consists of 50 students

    03:17 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhita Basti

@Kirti. To be very frank and as per my knowledge, the big4 consulting companies visit only the following campuses:- IIM A,B,C,L, ISB Hyderabad and XLRI. So you can target any of these institutes to achieve your aspirations

  • Profile Picture Ajit Singh

Hi Nikhita, has iimr shifted to its permanent campus? Can you tell what's a good percentile to convert with just decent wat and pi ? With focus on nc-obc

    03:25 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhita Basti

@Adish Also, this year the PGDHRM summer placements have been really great at IIM Ranchi, though I cannot divulge further details since the final reports are not out.

    03:27 PM

  • Profile Picture Nikhita Basti

@Ajit, IIMR has not yet shifted to the permanent campus. And my observation is that a 95 percentile in CAT, for nc-obc category, has a very good chance of conversion at new IIMs. Also if you have a work experience, it would be an added advantage
