CAT 2016 - Do's and Don'ts for the D-Day

A well-structured and a detailed strategy for the exam day is as important as your hard-work and preparation in the last few months. Should there be a trade-off between time management and accuracy? How important is the selection of questions? What is the difference between an IIM call getter and non-getters when it comes to attempting questions? Prepare yourself well-in-advance to make choices and prioritize questions on the exam day. Talk to Noel Roychoudhury, a 98%iler and a current student at IIM Kozhikode and discuss your plans for the exam day.

Dear participants, Today is the last session that I will be delivering and following are my suggestions for the D-Day: The biggest mistake you can commit in CAT 2016 is of making more attempts. What is the correct definition of an attempt? • All questions in QA in which more than 90 secs were spent but no answer was marked in the end • The DI/LR sets where considerable time was spent ultimately ending with abandonment of the set • RC questions not attempted after spending time in reading the passage • VA questions where time was spent in devising the logic but ultimately no option was marked Time wise analysis of attempts: Take any mock test that you have taken in recent times and sit back and analyze the following for every section: • Number of easy questions that were answered correctly and took around 25 minutes in total • Number of easy questions that were answered incorrectly and took around 15 minutes in total • Number of difficult questions that were answered incorrectly and took around 15 minutes in total • Number of difficult questions that were unanswered after spending 15 minutes in total • Number of difficult questions that were unanswered because you did not get time to see these questions • Number of easy questions that were unanswered because you did not get time to see these questions How to choose the right questions? Take any mock test that you have taken in recent times and sit back and analyze the following: • How many questions in each section did you leave which you should have attempted? • How many questions in each section did you attempt which you should have left? Next prepare the following chart of analysis: • Good Shot – easy questions + correct answers • Unforced Errors – easy questions + wrong answers • Missed Opportunities – easy questions + unattempt • Risky Shot – difficult questions + correct answers • Double Negative – difficult questions + wrong answers • Well Left – difficult questions + unattempt Repeat this exercise for all the mocks you have taken so far and some sort of pattern with respect to question types which are coming for every row of the chart is bound to be identified. This will help you visualize the mistakes in attempts you are making right now and help you identifying the type of questions you should attempt and leave in CAT 2016. Difference between IIM Call Getters vs others IIM Call getters – • attempt the easy questions • leaves the speed breakers • DOES NOT miss out on sitter questions. Others – • Attempts whatever questions come on the way • Leaves around 5-7 sitter questions • Wastes time on difficult and speed breaker questions Hope this helps. All the best! :)

Hello Noel, Firstly, Congrats that you made it to IIMs. My mock percentiles are a bit volatile, with average being around 94%ile (talking about TIME and CL). What has been bothering me is the fact that when I focus on RC/VA and LR, my Quants and DI suffer and vice versa. How did you manage to distribute ur preparation across these 4 areas during last 25-30 days? Also, how important is GK when it comes to interviews, GD/WAT?

    02:31 PM

  • Profile Picture Noel Roychoudhury

Anuj: around 80 questions with 85% accuracy should get you IIM calls. Aman: my 3 week strategy was covered in the first session, I will send you the same if you share your mail id. When it comes to interviews, an overall general awareness is indeed preferable as that helps you substantiate and validate your arguments in a relevant GD/WAT.

@Bosco - if you are very confident with your CAT preparation, you can start working on HR questions like Tell me about yourself, Why MBA? Why IIM? What are your strengths and weaknesses? What are your hobbies ? etc. Also, read newspapers and delve deep into knowing about your hobbies so that you can face any question asked to you. @Bhupesh - sure @Arun - sure, and I will send you the RC and VA section content that I shared in prior sessions too. @Bosco - will share the content

@Aman - as long as you can justify your career break to the interviewers and sight some meaningful reason as the cause of your break, it won't negatively affect your chances to get into an IIM or in any interview post admission. @Nikita - around 80 attempts with 85% accuracy should fetch you decent IIM calls
