Is having work experience or doing internship necessary to get into IIM's?

  • Profile Picture Sutanuka Roychowdhury

I graduated this year with A Bachelor in Architecture. I have been out of touch with maths etc for a long time and need to start from scratch. I decided to take a year break and prepare for CAT, XAT etc . I am doing a few relevant online courses on the side and freelancing projects. I have the option of joining as an architect in a firm, but I will left with very less time to prepare after that. Is taking the drop going to be risky? I am female, general and will be considered for academic diversity. Kindly help.

Your acad record is definitely sketchy and you should tailor your expectations. The old IIMs especially will be a problem with this profile. Take SNAP, NMAT, XAT, IIFT and maybe even CMAT and hope for the best. You will definitely get admission in a good school if you crack the tests. When we say crack, 99 percentile minimum in each of the tests.

Gaps will always be a problem. You need to demonstrate that you made good use of that time in life. Focussed students who can multitask will always be preferred over those who take year offs to study or chill.

Have you already scored 98 percentile? How did you figure you will score exactly 98? Not more not less? Your acads are average and for even new IIMs to call you, 99 percentile is bare minimum. Anything below that you will need to look at schools that give very low weight to acads. We suggest you write all other entrance exams to be safe.

First step is to score a high percentile. You need to tackle this question in the interview. It is likely they will ask you this question. Are you bad at multitasking? But we know enough students who have answered this and got through. Especially women candidates have it slightly easier

There will be certain profiles where experienced candidates will be less preferred - for e.g Sales and Marketing jobs where everyone has to go through rural stints and in different cities and territories. Experienced people are rigid and some even have families and hence as a rule for summer placements especially, marketing and fmcg companies prefer those with less than 2 years exp. however , Banks, Consulting and other companies should look at you
